A Calorie is Not a Calorie: Comparing Foods!

January 19, 2018 By Mindy

This or That? Let’s play the food game!

As I prepare and track my eats for today, I have my vegetable load <in part>, including green beans, riced cauliflower, and broccoli going on the stove.

This filling combo offers me 280 calories, of which there are phytonutrients to actually nourish me and establish helpful gut flora, 20g of protein, 50g of carbs, and 23g of beneficial fiber. It has 0g of fat and it has 20g of plant sugars by default.

Get in my belly…lean me out!

Door #2, a treat my kids had last night <I’m not a fan!>, M&Ms:

This tasty snack has not one, but TWO servings per bag. Ah, snap, that means everything gets doubled <So who only eats half the bag?!>

181 calories, 1g of protein, 29g carbs, 0g Fiber, 7g of fat (inflammatory hydrogenated oils), and 26g of refined white sugar <creating the crave for more!>. NOW, multiply that times TWO…do the math!

However, a calorie is not a calorie. For optimal wellness, we want to eat real foods with plant colors and fibers, proteins and beneficial fats to aid the body and mind’s needs.

Tell yourself you deserve a treat or “everything in moderation”, but the reality is the standard American diet is full of all this from SO many daily sources: food colors, refined oils and sugars, cheap dairy ingredients, and little to no fiber and protein.

Chemical soup. And friends, our bodies are paying the price!

What we eat then wants to be repeated. I’m not even mentioning the hormonal impact, satiety factors, or the reward centers in the brain that get activated.

A lifestyle in one direction or the other has tremendous compound effects. We can’t cheat the body or get away with anything….the body is brilliant and just responds accordingly to the food information we provide it.

Regardless of what we did yesterday or last month, isn’t it awesome that every day we have a choice in what we eat? We each do, a fresh start. Empowering!

Knowledge and action are power!

To Your Wellness,
-Mindy
