We had some fun eats for the Super Bowl and my daughter wanted a bowl of ice cream one day as her after-school snack. I’m always amazed when I measure out the reality of what “one serving” really looks like. Darn it!
One serving: This is 1/2 cup at 140 calories, 24g of carbs and 16g of sugars. It takes up about 1/4 of the bowl. It is about the size of a kids’ scoop if you were dining out.
I wish I could tell you one serving is the size of the bowl, but that is about 3-5 servings, especially if it was densely packed and overflowing.
Sadly, in our society menu sizes are usually double and triple what true serving sizes really are. Our minds have become used to a larger amount of food and we feel good when we finish our plates. We don’t want to waste money, correct? What happens, that in an effort to be thrifty, we end up overeating and the compound effect of that at every meal over time has really impacted our waist lines and our wellness. We’ve become desensitized to the reality of a true portion size. We respond to container sizes and have lost recognition of what is nutritionally enough.
The ONLY way to really know is to keep track and record of how much is really sufficient. Have you checked the serving size of your favorite treat? Not fun to do, but good to know! I like to look at my daily patterns and habits and be in the know of the content and quantity of what I’m eating. The tad bit of extra time it takes to know is the big difference in your results along the way!
And you’re worth it!
