Marketing Hurts; Reading Labels Helps!

October 21, 2014 By Mindy

LabelsThis truly upsets me. I’m going to go out on a limb and put the state of American wellness in partial blame of marketing. No one made someone eat what they do, but some packaging certainly has not helped us.

The label says “Sugar free”. The ingredients say: water, corn syrup, vegetable oil, partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Reworded, that is water, sugar, oil filler, trans fat, and then many more.

The packaging looks colorful, bright, comforting and encouraging that there is no sugar. Wait, corn syrup is not a sweetener? It still raises insulin. Please don’t be fooled.

I’m not calling foods good or bad. You decide that. I’m calling marketing concerning. It certainly is not working for us. It’s purely misleading and for someone trying to watch their diet and lower their sugar intake and keep insulin spikes low, this is not helping. Corn syrup does to the body exactly what sugar does and even takes longer to digest. What started out for one’s good intention just derailed.

How can we rise above the package?
-Pause to read labels
-Know yourself and what you can tolerate and how much {Become a student of you!}
-Look past the big, scientific words and see what they really are. There are about 20 different ways to put sweetness into an item. It all just becomes a linguistics game, but your body still responds the same no matter what they call it on the label.
-Be willing to walk away and choose another option…changing your mind is a ok!

I’ve learned SO much about food and why my body was reacting the way it was because I looked past the target words on the front and went to the ingredients on the back. You’re worth the extra time to do that!

Interested in learning how to balance your nutrition?  I’d love to help!
